ProLegu - Innovative protein products from sustainably grown legumes for poultry nutrition

Kurzfassung
The emerging global competition for resources between Western and developing countries, the dependence of European countries on soy imports, and global ecological aspects have led to an increasing demand for home-grown and sustainable protein sources such as European grain legumes for feeding livestock. Our project aims at developing innovative technological approaches for the production of high quality proteins with superior nutritional value from domestic legumes. The consortium includes industrial and academic partners from Poland and Germany with competencies and expertise in the areas of plant production, food and feed technology as well as animal nutrition, thus representing the entire supply chain. In the proposed project, product innovations will be developed, providing scientific evidence for the performance and health-promoting potential of legume-based protein products. The combination of value meat production from poultry with the perspective for a broader application as dietary ingredients. Legume proteins will be modified by mechanical, fermentative and thermal treatments to improve their nutritional value and functional breeding, fractionation, processing and valorization of legume proteins and nutritional science will result in new and economically relevant product innovations. The outcome will be new ingredients to be used as feed in high properties. Novel processing technologies that have an effective impact on product value, stability and safety will be deventerpriseseloped. Energy-efficient novel tools, including sustainable biotechnological and physico-chemical technologies will be major outcomes of this project. The degradation of antinutritional factors and improvement of digestibility of legume-based products will be achieved by cost-effective modifications. Combined techniques will be assessed as means for obtaining separate by-products such as fractions of valuable dietary fibers or fermented products with probiotic properties. The nutritional impact of modified proteins will be investigated in broilers and turkeys, both being increasingly relevant food producing animals in the European market. The expected prototype products will be innovative, sustainable and economical, and will allow further exploitation by small and medium enterprises. Due to the proposed valorization process, societal demands for ecologically - and environmentally-friendly, as well as sustainable products will be fully met. The expected market volume is high. In 2010/2011, approx. 6 million t of protein ingredients were used in the feed industry in Germany, compared to approx. 2 million t in Poland. Plant producers, technology-driven small and medium enterprises and the feed industry would gain a considerable economic benefit from the new products, assuming that each percent of the conventional protein sources replaced by innovative products (expected price EUR 500 per t) would result in an annual market volume of EUR 30 million.
